Indexes for Novels – Fact or Fiction?

A number of years ago (actually 24 years ago!), I called for publishers to experiment by adding an index to a novel. Certainly War & Peace could have used at least a character index.

While some novels include a Table of Contents listing the various chapters in the book, I’ve never seen one with an index. Why not put an index in your next novel?

Not only will the index be something unique and, hence, newsworthy, but it also might make your novel more appealing to librarians, who insist on indexes for nonfiction books.

Personally, I’d like an index in a novel, especially a novel with multiple plots or many characters. An index would, for instance, allow me to locate the page where a new character or plot line was introduced. For mystery lovers, an index would all them to review the clues without having to hunt through every page to find a particular scene.

Hurray for indexes!
